Atlanta Day Trips and Tours

Atlanta and the surrounding area offer some 'must-see' sights and activities that are not easily accessible without a car. Together with Destination South we have put together some very special tours to allow AVMA Convention attendees to experience these Atlanta landmarks.

Buckhead the Beautiful
Friday, July 30     Time:1:00pm – 5:00pm

Your trip begins with a drive through the West Paces Ferry area, an exclusive residential neighborhood,  and past the Governor's mansion. Next, you can explore Atlanta’s colorful past from the Civil War to Civil Rights and beyond at the Atlanta History Center. On the Center grounds take a stroll through the Tullie Smith House and Farm. A plantation-plain house built in the 1840s, surrounded by a separate open-hearth kitchen, blacksmith shop, smokehouse, double corncrib, pioneer log cabin, and barn, as well as traditional vegetable, herb, and flower gardens. Next is a tour of the classically styled, 1928, Swan House Mansion, one of the most recognized and photographed Atlanta landmarks. You'll have time to purchase a light snack or soft drink in the History Center.
Cost:  $55 per person. Includes:  A Motor coach, tour guide for 4 hours, admission to The Atlanta History Center, The Swan House and Tullie Smith House, tax, gratuities and all arrangements.  ADA: The Atlanta History Museum is ADA accessible as is the downstairs of the Swan Coach House, but not the Tullie Smith House.

Enhanced 6-hour Buckhead (Tuesday only)
Tuesday August 3    Time: 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
Cost: $100 –
The Tuesday Buckhead tour features all stops and sites as the 4-hour tour plus a tour of Governor's Mansion and pre-paid lunch at the Swan Coach House.

 

Atlanta Sampler
Saturday, July 31,    Time: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
This 3 hour city tour takes you to the Atlanta Cyclorama, a Civil War museum and home to world’s largest oil painting, ‘The Battle of Atlanta’.  The Cyclorama theater’s surround sound with music and sound effects invites you to experience the battle as the 112-year-old painting comes alive. Next, you’ll see many historic and modern landmarks of downtown Atlanta including Centennial Olympic Park and other Olympic venues, historic houses of worship, impressive state and local government buildings, Underground Atlanta and the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center for Nonviolent Change. The tour concludes with a drive through the West Paces Ferry area, one of Atlanta’s most exclusive residential districts.
Cost: $48. Tour includes: Motor coach and tour guide for 3 hours, admission to the Cyclorama, tax, gratuities and all arrangements. ADA: Cyclorama is ADA compliant.

 

Stone Mountain Park
Saturday, July 31    Time: 9:30 am – 2:30 pm   
This family-friendly outing takes you Atlanta’s most visited attraction, Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park. View the majestic carving of General Robert E. Lee, “Stonewall” Jackson and Jefferson Davis. Travel back in time on the streets of Crossroads, Stone Mountain Park's 1870s town or tour the authentic Antebellum Plantation and its 18 outbuildings.  Take the skylift to the top of the mountain for a spectacular view, ride around the mountain on the train, or board the historic Henry W. Grady paddle steamer.

Cost: $75 adult     $70 children ages 3-11. Tour includes: Motor coach and tour guide for 5 hours, admission to Stone Mountain Park (All Attractions), tax, gratuities, lunch is on your own.

 

Zoo Atlanta

Standard tour – Sunday, August, 1 from  1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Tuesday, August 3 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Enhanced tour – Monday, August 2 – 9:00 am – 1:00 pm  
Zoo Atlanta tours offer close encounters with more than 1,000 animals from around the world in a natural habitat setting. Meet Giant Pandas from China and their two American-born offspring. Zoo Atlanta also has one of the nation's most recognized collections of great apes. The standard zoo tour will be offered on Sunday and Tuesday.

 

On Monday, August 2 an enhanced “behind the scenes” guided tour to the Animal Nutrition Clinic with a fascinating talk by the Education department on the care of the animals and how the special diets are prepared.
Cost: Standard tour – $62 adult, $57 Children ages 3-11;
Cost: Enhanced tour – $72 All ages 
Both tours include: Luxury motor coach and experienced tour guide for 4 hours, admission to Zoo Atlanta, tax, gratuities and all arrangements. ADA:  Zoo Atlanta is ADA compliant.

 

Antebellum Trail Covington and Social Circle, Georgia
Monday, August 2     Time: 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
Just outside the hustle and bustle of Atlanta, sits the small, charming city of Covington, known for its wealth of Antebellum and Victorian-era homes. Your day begins with a visit Sandtown Place, built in 1840 and surrounded by lovely gardens.  Next you'll visit Boxwood, an 1830 Federal design home, furnished with American Empire and Victorian antiques. A very special lunch awaits you at the Blue Willow Inn, recognized by Southern Living, Gourmet Magazine, CNN and USA Today as the South’s finest Southern Cooking restaurant. 

Cost: $90 per person. Includes: Motor coach, tour guide for 6 hours, admission to two private homes, driving tour of Covington, shopping in Covington Square, buffet lunch at The Blue Willow Inn, tax, gratuities and all arrangements. Homes are privately owned and are not ADA accessible.


Atlanta Botanical Gardens and the High Museum of Art
Sunday, August 1    Time 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Enjoy an inspiring day visiting two of Atlanta’s places of beauty. The Atlanta Botanical Gardens features 15 acres of formal gardens including specialty flower and rose gardens, an expansive 60-foot water lily pool and the the stunning Fuqua Orchid Center with with hundreds of varieties of orchids.

Next you'll visit The High Museum of Art. With over 11,000 works of art in its permanent collection,  The High Museum of Art is the leading art museum the Southeastern United States.  

Price:  $70 per person. Includes: Motor coach, experienced tour guide for 4 hours, admission to Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and the High Museum, tax, gratuities and all arrangements.
