Veterinary Interactive Labs
You Spoke . . . .We Listened! In response to requests for pre-convention labs to allow lab participants time to attend more lecture sessions, we've added two pre-convention labs on Friday, July 30. Interactive labs will be held in the Georgia World Congress Center with the exception of one lab at the Georgia Aquarium and one at Emory University. Interactive Labs are overseen and approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee of the AVMA. Veterinary Labs marked with an astrisk * are also open to veterinary technicians.
Note: Non-member Veterinarians add $50 to each fee. Labs traditionally reach capacity quickly, so please register as early. |

Rehabilitation of the Small Animal Patient with Orthopedic and Neurologic Conditions ID# 9002 SOLD OUT 8:00 am – 5:50 pm Room B404
Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of canine rehabilitation including use of manual therapies, physical modalities, and therapeutic exercise. The morning session will review the pertinent soft tissue anatomy with live dog palpation, followed by manual therapies demonstrations on live dogs. The afternoon session will discuss indications for and application of physical modalities, including laser, therapeutic ultrasound, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and cryotherapy. Fantastic Voyage! Everything You Wanted to See in the Ear and More!

Learn the proper technique in using videotoscope equipment. A complete handout will be provided to all participants along with instruction of all procedures taught by a board-certified veterinary dermatologist. During this hands-on laboratory, the participant will learn normal canine ear anatomy, techniques for deep ear cleaning and irrigation, how to perform otoscopic biopsies, remove growths from within the ear, and how to perform a myringotomy. In this interactive laboratory, participants will get a demonstration how to perform a basic neurologic examination from head to toe, then practice and hone their skills in the presence of a neurologic expert. Orthopedic Surgery 9:00 am – 5:50 pm ID# 9007 Room B407
Fracture repair of tibias can often be challenging, as external coaptation often fails. Surgical repair is recommended and preferred. During this hands-on laboratory, there will be an introduction to basic fracture repair and management using external fixators and IMEX mechanical devices. During this hands-on laboratory, participants will learn how to perform a McMaster’s fecal egg count, how to perform a quantitative fecal examination in your clinic, and how to identify small ruminant and camelid parasites and nonparasite artifacts. Additional information will include how to prepare and ship a fecal sample for specialized testing in an outside laboratory, vacuum packing samples for routine fecal analysis, and lectin staining for differentiating the Barberpole worm from other trichostrongyles. Attendees will gain a window to basic knowledge that is needed to provide chiropractic health care safely and effectively based on the thorough physical and neurological examination of the patient. Canine Orthopedic Diagnostics 8:00 am – 1:50 am ID# 9001 Room B404
This interactive lab will focus on orthopedic diagnostics including gait evaluation, orthopedic palpation tests, and orthopedic devices. Gait analysis will include new information gained through clinical use of analytic gait platform analysis (Gait Rite), which provides weight distribution and foot strike patterns. Practical diagnostics will be emphasized with specific maneuvers and tips. In addition orthopedic devices will be demonstrated including stifle braces, prosthesis, orthotics, shoulder support system, slings, and support wraps. This hands-on laboratory will allow the participant to learn respiratory techniques such as thoracostomy and tracheostomy tube placement; nutritional management with nasoesophageal, nasogastric, and esophagostomy tube placement; vascular access; bone marrow aspirates; and epidurals. In this hands-on lab, participants will learn how to perform a basic ophthalmic examination, how to identify normal and abnormal conditions, and how to accurately perform and interpret intraocular pressures, fluorescein stain, and Schirmer tear tests. Practical Techniques for Select Pocket Pet Species 8:00 am – 11:50 am ID# 9011 Lab will be held at Emory University
This lab is designed to offer the practitioner the opportunity to gain experience in procedures commonly performed on selected species of pocket pets: mice, rats, and rabbits Procedures will include general handling and physical examination, injection techniques, blood collection, and anesthetic techniques, including intubation, of all three species. During this hands-on interactive lab, the participant will learn and perform complete dental survey radiographs on dogs and cats then learn how to interpret normal and abnormal dental anatomy through an interactive case discussion. Participants will learn the age for socialization in puppies, proper evaluation of puppies, how to formulate a targeted treatment plan, proper socialization techniques, how to offer puppy socialization classes, and how to use puppy socialization as a practice builder.
